I would like to start a discussion about combining 2D animation with 3D.

Recently I have had ideas about making an animation where all the characters
are animated in @  2d (like in D-paint) .
Then I would take the 2d "anim brushes" and combine them in lightwave in
a 3d environment.
So that each character would be a different image sequence, and the different image sequences would interact in LW.
I have an idea as to how:
I can make the 2D animations in Dpaint, and output them to sequential image
files.
2. then i get the image files ad batch process them to get alpha files
  for each character.
3. then I load in the original images into lightwave and image map them on
   a flat plain,
4. then I laod te alpha's into lightwave and use them for clipmaps on the same polygon.

This seems like a very long route...
I think there might be an easier way.

Any Suggestions?
